24 STREET CHILDREN IN INSECURE ENVIRONMENTS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY: NCPA
February 14, 2011: The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has recently taken into their custody 24 street children who were residing in insecure environments.
“These children have been housed at orphanages after being produced before court. Measures have been taken to locate more street children residing in similar conditions,” said Attorney at Law, Anoma Dissanayake, Chairperson of the Authority.
The official said that they could not take all such children into their custody, due to the lack of financial allocations.
According to Dissanayake, there is a lack of housing facilities for this purpose as well.
She noted that it was time necessary action was taken to provide counselling and rehabilitation for these children, under the full supervision of the authority.
“We intend to rehabilitate these children within a period of 5 or 6 months and they have extended invitations to voluntary organizations as well as non governmental organizations to support the venture," said Dissanayake.
